Project description

The experience of the everyday world is abundant with atmospheric qualities: a cozy living
room, a busy workplace, or a beautiful musical composition. Despite their ubiquity in
experiential life, how atmospheres affect us remains unanswered. Atmospheres, understood
here as affect or mood attributed to space, are currently a significant theoretical topic, but
there is a need to comprehend how and why they influence us. The project will qualitatively
investigate atmospheres in the experience of architecture and music, as art is recognized as
the intensification of everyday experience. By analyzing atmospheres across various aesthetic
experiences, and by following their experiential consequences over time, we will be able to
determine essential features of atmospheric experience. This approach will allow us to
discover the detailed features of atmospheric experience never revealed before.
