Project description

Through a number of research and marine environment projects, the project wishes to restore biodiversity and contribute to a future healthy ecosystem in Køge Bay.
Through the discharge of nitrogen, mining, and rock fishing, there has been a significant deterioration in biodiversity and the marine environment in Køge Bay. Therefore, a holistic and ecosystem-based solution is needed to improve the ecological conditions of the bay.
In collaboration with municipalities, universities and other relevant partners, the project will implement six work packages, including the establishment of an artificial reef, mussel banks, cave-forming reefs next to river outlets and dissemination reefs. The artificial reef combines the laying of stones and recycled concrete to research whether concrete has the same positive effect on biodiversity as rock. All recycled concrete has been tested for hazardous substances (PCBs, heavy metals, etc.), cleaned and crushed so that no environmentally hazardous substances or rusty iron are discharged to the vulnerable marine environment.
