Project description

In most Danish waters, you can find lost fishing gear, also called ghost nets, which pollute and continue to catch fish after they are lost. It is estimated that there are in the order of 500-1,000 lost nets in the Limfjord, and nets are constantly being lost in the fjord.

The project wants to put a stop to the problem of ghost nets in the Limfjord by first stopping the supply of new ghost nets and then by locating, salvaging and removing existing ghost nets with a focus on not damaging the fragile habitats on the bottom. The project will engage local associations, organizations, businesses and enthusiasts across the Limfjord in locating and salvaging the lost fishing nets and further develop the Limfjord Council's digital reporting tool for lost gear as an app that makes it possible to report the location of the lost nets via mobile phone on the site.
