Healthy Vejle Fiord 2.0
Project description
The marine environment in Vejle Fjord is in poor condition. The fjord is plagued by massive amounts of crabs, reduction of eelgrass, too many algae, lack of fish and oxygen depletion.
Vejle municipality and University of Southern Denmark will set the framework for marine nature restoration of Vejle Fjord over the next five years. The project, which follows up from Sund Vejle Fjord 1.0, will not only work on marine nature restoration.
The important work to remove nutrients from land will also be intensified.
As a result of Sund Vejle Fjord 1.0 and the perspectives and results that the project has generated, new initiatives are being implemented in the catchment area of Vejle Å to limit the discharge of nitrogen.
The project contributes to the restoration of the coastal area in Vejle Fjord with an ecosystem-based approach, where the catchment area is included in the management of the coastal area. In addition to the nature restoration measures, a central part of the project is to continuously collect and analyze data to monitor the effects of the project. These analyses are carried out by the University of Southern Denmark.
The project hopes to inspire other municipalities to use the ecosystem-based approach.
