Organ sparing surgery vs. standard resection for early stage colon cancer in elderly frail patients
Project description
One of the biggest challenges in colon cancer surgery is complications after surgery, as well as the risk of relapse after surgery. An operation for colon cancer means that a larger part of the intestine, usually at least 30-40 cm, is removed, with a subsequent risk of operation-related complications. In addition to the increased risk in the short term, there are the complications with daily diarrhea, often for several years after surgery, as well as higher risk of new surgeries due to scar tissue.
On the basis of existing preliminary data, a RCT will examine the effect of a more gentle surgery for older people, at risk of surgical complications in connection with surgery for colon cancer.
The grant is part of the VELUX FOUNDATION's focus on cancer research in vulnerable elderly people.
