The sea in focus – VELUX FONDEN’s environmental programme at the People’s Meeting on Bornholm

13.06.2022 l More news

Onboard the schooner Freia, which is docking on the island of Bornholm for the People’s Meeting 2022, you can learn more about wastewater, plastic pollution in the oceans and communicating the challenges facing the sea when a number of projects supported by VELUX FONDEN hone in on the state of the marine environment.

Project: InWater

16 June 13:30 – 14:15

The Danish marine environment is under pressure from several quarters, and there is a need for ambitious initiatives to reverse this trend. The ‘InWater’ project describes the work being carried out to improve the marine environment and raise awareness of the coastal marine environment around Bornholm through the gathering of knowledge, environmental improvement initiatives and knowledge dissemination.

Project: MarinePlastic

17 June 09:15 – 10.00

Marine plastic pollution is one of the fastest-growing environmental problems of our time. Plastic accounts for between 60% and 80% of today’s global marine litter, and 4-12 million tonnes are released annually into the marine environment. Dive beneath the surface of the sea and hear how Marine Plastic, the interdisciplinary centre for ground-breaking research into marine plastic pollution, is working to improve the marine environment with data and knowledge dissemination.

Project: A Clean Sound

17 June 17:30 – 18:15

Every year, hundreds of millions of litres of raw sewage are discharged directly from sewer systems into the Sound between Denmark and Sweden, creating an obvious health hazard for people using the sea and with major consequences for the marine environment. Come on board when the ‘A Clean Sound’ project puts wastewater discharge on the agenda.
