Project description

The SUPRE project aims to increase understanding of the significance of various threats to Danish seabirds. The Danish waters constitute vital foraging areas, but several species are experiencing declines, which may be due to a range of pressure factors such as climate change, diseases, offshore activities, fishing, and pollution from marine litter and hazardous substances. The project will investigate and better understand these threats to reduce pollution and protect the marine environment, with a focus on sensitive key species such as auks, kittiwakes, fulmars and gannets. Activities will include both basic and applied research as well as involving volunteers and stakeholders. Birdlife Denmark and local teams of beach surveyors will contribute to citizen science recordings of the occurrence and causes of mortality of stranded birds. Collaboration with authorities, fishing, and offshore industries will promote solutions to marine plastic pollution.
