Ocean Institute – The Voice of the Ocean

The ocean covers over two thirds of the planet and contains unique ecosystems that are crucial for the climate, biodiversity, and human living conditions. Nevertheless, the sea is the most neglected natural environment and is under pressure from pollution, nutrients, climate change, fishing, energy production, and raw material extraction. Restoring the ocean to a state of ecological robustness requires a holistic effort based on knowledge.

The grant builds upon the original grant from VELUX FONDEN from 2021, which enabled the establishment of the Ocean Institute as an independent actor, with the aim of making research-based knowledge accessible to civil society, businesses, and politicians while also creating a space for dialogue and collaboration between stakeholders with very different perspectives (science to policy)

In recent years, the Ocean Institute has contributed with analyses, dialogues, agenda-setting, and proposals, which have been heard and used by different sectors and decision-makers as well as in political and public debates.

Ocean Institute will towards 2031 work with the biggest and most far-reaching challenges facing the ocean – the so-called megachallenges: "Restoration of Ocean and Climate", "Sustainable Use and Economy", and "Pollution and Waste".
