Centre for Marine Nature Restoration

Experience with marine restoration in Denmark is limited, and there is still a significant need to establish a stronger knowledge base.

The Centre for Marine Restoration is a national collaboration between the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Aarhus University (AU), and the Limfjordsrådet and was established in 2022 based on funding from VELUX FONDEN and the Marine Ministry of Environment. The overall purpose of the Centre is to promote knowledge-based implementation of marine restoration with the aim of strengthening the resilience of marine ecosystems, ecological balance, and ecosystem services and functions in Danish waters.

In the period 2026-2030, the Centre will work with seascape and mosaic nature, coexistence between marine nature restoration and infrastructural facilities such as offshore wind turbine, effects of marine nature restoration as well as administrative barriers, knowledge sharing and citizen involvement. For the latter, the Center will promote active involvement of the local communities, so that increased awareness of solutions and challenges to the problems of the marine environment arises.
