Project description

The environment in Vejle Fjord is in poor condition. The fjord is plagued by massive amounts of crabs, reduction of eelgrass, too much algae, lack of fish and oxygen depletion.

Despite efforts to reduce nutrient discharges, the fjord's ecosystems are struggling to re-establish themselves on their own. Therefore, an active external effort is needed to restore the fjord.

The Healthy Vejle Fjord project will therefore carry out a number of nature-restoring measures in the fjord, including laying mussel beds and stone reefs, planting eelgrass and combating crabs.

In addition to the nature restoration measures, a central part of the project is to continuously collect and analyze data to monitor the effects of the project. These analyzes are carried out by the University of Southern Denmark under the supplementary grant "Fjordtjek".

The project hopes to inspire other municipalities on how to target efforts in the marine area. This is done by nuancing and qualifying the use of marine instruments.
