Project description

Edge AI for High Stability-Robustness of Power Electronics in Modern Power Systems

Renewable energy resources are increasingly integrated into power systems through power electronic converters, which are critical to the stability and security of the energy supply. The control systems of such power converters are designed based on simple, deterministic models that have been effective for decades but are difficult to adapt to modern, dynamic power systems, something that can have drastic consequences. In 2019, for example, this caused a windfarm to be disconnected from the power grid which caused a power outage for more than 1 million people. This project aims to use artificial intelligence and signal processing to redefine the control systems of modern power converters so that such problems are avoided in the future.
